DISCOVER YOUR STYLE + DECORATE WITH CONFIDENCE
Confession: when I was 12, I stole something that didn’t belong to me.
My mom and I have always loved poking around homes still under construction. We would check out the floor plan, watch the progress, imagine what we would do with the space.
On one such adventure, something caught my eye that I just had to have.
The construction paper taped up to the walls to prevent overspray when the trim was being painted was the perfect shade of mossy green. It was just the inspiration I needed for my bedroom wall color.
So I tore a piece off and took it with me.
The next day, I brought that piece of stolen construction paper to the paint store, had it color matched and painted my room.
DECORATING INSPIRATION CAN COME FROM THE MOST UNLIKELY PLACES.
Hello, I’m Emily.
I’m a mom, a wife, and a blogger.
And I’ve been stealing decorating inspiration from the most unlikely places since before I can remember.
I love paint swatches, fabric samples, design boards and open shelves for displaying.
I like salvaged items, neutral wood tones, fresh greenery in tarnished silver sugar bowls and stacks and stacks of white dishes.
Most of all, I like to make things look pretty.
Decorating our home has become not only a hobby but also what I do professionally.
All this decorating and styling caught the eye of the people at Better Homes & Gardens magazine and over the years, our home has been photographed and published in four separate issues.
It was so much fun (and a bit surreal) to have our home featured in a magazine. It is flattering, for sure, but also such an interesting behind-the-scenes look at all that goes in to creating perfectly styled spaces in a magazine.
The thing is, I didn’t decorate our home so that I could have it featured in a magazine. I’m guessing you don’t do that either. That’s not the point.
We decorate because our homes are a place to gather, to feel warm and comfortable, to share joys and burdens and everyday moments. We want our homes to reflect our personalities and feel put-together to create a lovely space to do life in.
That is the point of a well-styled home.
HOME IS WHERE LIFE HAPPENS AND MAKING IT PRETTY IS VALUABLE.
DECORATING IS NOT AS SIMPLE AS IT USED TO BE.
I’ve noticed (and perhaps you have too!) that as more decorating inspiration becomes available – on pinterest, blogs, magazines, online shops – the harder and more confusing decorating has become.
- Do you feel overwhelmed by decorating your home?
- Do you feel defeated, indecisive and not sure where to begin?
- Do you fall into the trap of buying what is trendy only to find that it doesn’t ‘go’ in your space?
- Do you struggle with figuring out what your style even is?
YOU’RE NOT ALONE.
We recently asked a simple question to blog readers:
WHAT IS THE BIGGEST DECORATING CHALLENGE YOU’RE FACING IN YOUR HOME?
Here are just a few of the responses:
What is my style?
“The biggest challenge I have come across when decorating my home is finding my style. If I see something cute, I still question ‘is it my style?’. I just don’t know what to do.”
I feel overwhelmed.
“My biggest challenge in decorating my home is indecision. I feel like I can’t decide what will look good where so spaces stay blank for years. I feel overwhelmed in even knowing where to start. I see other people’s beautiful homes and wish mine could look more like theirs but I never know where to start.”
I’m always comparing.
“I like a variety of looks/styles and have an idea of how I want our home to feel for our family, but every decision feels so final and it’s just very hard for me to choose and commit to items and I’m always comparing and like what I see in other homes but can’t seem to pull it together in mine.”
I have a small budget.
“I have lots of ideas and inspiration of ways to make our home more ‘us’ but a small budget. Then when I do have money to spend on decorating, I get overwhelmed with what to prioritize next on my long list. I’m very thankful for our home and have a strong desire to add beauty.”
I need a plan.
“My biggest challenge in decorating my home is perfectionism and not wanting to drill a bunch of holes, etc and then not like something there. It’s the part about having the end in mind at the beginning, but not being confident it will look as good as it does in my mind once it’s done.”
It lacks personality.
“What I love the most about a lot of home bloggers are the little touches that are completely “‘them”, but I lack the confidence to know that the things that I love are completely me and look good too.”
After receiving over 150 responses here’s what we discovered:
HOME DECORATING CAN FEEL COMPLICATED . . .
Where do you start? How do find your own unique decorating style? What if you don’t have an unlimited budget? How do you know where to splurge and where to save? Why does your room always feel like it is missing something but you can’t figure out what it is?
Maybe you’ve pinned ideas on Pinterest for a bedroom update. Or you’ve moved furniture, painted walls or rehung pictures hoping something will click in your home and set you on the road to decorating success.
You’ve tried some things without a real sense for what your true decorating style really is and you’re not sure if it’s the right color or pillow or decorating choice.
. . . BUT IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE.
Through years and years of loving, studying, analyzing, tweaking and experimenting with home decorating, I have arrived at a few important conclusions:
- There is a clear process that makes decorating doable and easy.
- There are a handful of essentials that should make their way into every room.
- Sticking to a personal style makes all the difference.
The good news is, these truths are not just for me. They are for you, too!
Imagine how great it would feel to have a step-by-step plan for decorating any room in your home! What if you could give your personal style a name and let that guide decisions for your space? How much more enjoyable would decorating be if you felt excited and confident making personal design choices?
